Selene, the moon, introduces the story (Space Opera)
Baltimore, 1860. Impey Barbicane (Barb), proffesor of astronomy, struggles with his sense of identity, and share his interest in feminine clothes as the source of his obsession with the moon (...And Between). Astronomy Club President, Captain Nicholl, and Secretary, Michel Ardan are more obsessed with themselves and their… manhood (Telescope). Selene watches from above (Strange Creatures I). The American civil war breaks out, and Baltimore’s astronomers are called to the front lines (GunPowder), but Barb is hesitant to kill. He believes his discomfort among the men and pull towards space makes him an alien, and when the war is over determines he can use the new weapons to build a RocketShip to the moon and find answers for his conflicted identity (Alien).
Selene looks down on him with pity, and introduces us to the moon’s inhabitants (Strange Creatures II). The Selenites dance and party, high on snorted MoonDust. All except Pandia, who feels distant from her peers and wonders if she belongs somewhere else (MoonDust). She is forced to take the MoonDust and gives in, joining the rave.
Back on earth, the astronomers hold their first Astronomy Club Meeting since the war. Barb introduces his idea for a RocketShip that shoots like a bullet out of a giant gun. Nicholl and the others are skeptical, but he sees the opportunity to colonize the moon and stake his place in history, and agrees to support the mission if he and Ardan can come too. Barb directs the astronomy club in building his rocket (Divide and Conquer) and they prepare for launch. Ardan brings umbrellas, just like in the Meliez film.
The rocket takes off (From the Earth to the Moon). Selene sings about her love for the Earth and wonders if it shares her feelings (Orbit). Barb's RocketShip hits her in the eye, re-creating the famous scene from the Meliez film, and she screams. Pandia, watching, wonders who would do such a thing. The astronomers leave the ship and explore the lunar surface (Moon Landing). While the others rest, Barb looks up at the earth, questioning their new sense of perspective and sense of self. Selene does too (Potential Energy).
When Nichol and Ardan wake up, they discover the MoonDust’s similarly to GunPowder (Smells like GunPowder) but Nicholl pushes them onward into a cave full of giant mushrooms. They are approached by a Selenite, which Barb tries to make contact with, but Nicholl shoots with his umbrella and it explodes (Mushroom Cave). The others are horrified, and Nicholl reveals his plan to conquer the moon and kill its inhabitants in the name of progress (Divide and Conquer Reprise/Space Opera Reprise). Another Selenite appears, and Nicholl goats Ardan into killing it. They are soon surrounded, and Barb reveals themselves and comes out to them as a fellow alien. Pandia watches on, epathizing with their search for identity, but the other aliens reject anyone not from the moon. Barb becomes increasingly angry at their rejection, and fires his umbrella into the crowd (Confrontation).
Selene questions her feelings in her one-sided relationship with the earth and wonders if it's good for them, but can't leave (Just a Phase).
The astronomers escape, and Nicholl learns Barb never made the RocketShip to return, as they planned to stay on the moon. Barb forms a plan to pull the rocket over a cliff, hopefully giving them enough momentum to clear the moon’s gravity and make it home. Nicholl congratulates Barb on killing the selenites, and says they're finally a man (Return to Earth). He pulls the RocketShip off the cliff, Pandia latches on to the outside at the last minute, and they all fall back through space towards earth as Barb questions their responsibility and guilt (Perfect Human).
When they land, Pandia is captured by the astronomers as a trophy of their conquest. A parade is held in their honor and Barb announces that they will not stop until they have conquered every planet and sun in the universe (Parade). Barb and Pandia see each other and each other’s search for belonging and answers about their own identity. Pandia reveals she is building her own RocketShip to escape earth and find a new place to search for self discovery (I Am I Am I Am). Selene admits she is even unsure about her own sense of self, but wondering may be the best part (Epilogue: That's Why).
